Massage!

The passive half of joint repair

Previously we looked at how load training is the foundation of the joint repair process, as it's the only way to trigger collagen synthesis (the growth of new connective tissue, specifically deep joint tissue -meniscus, ligaments, etc.).

However, joint repair isn't just about growing new connective tissue.  It's also about remodeling existing connective tissue, primarily fascia.

Fascia is the primary mechanism through which we transmit force to tendons.


Eccentric/isometric contraction stretches the fascia under load, which lubricates it and breaks down adhesion and scarring.

This reduces pressure on nerve tissue, which dampens pain signaling, which allows the tissue mass to handle more load through deeper range, which restores joint space and prompts collagen synthesis.


The only other thing that does this to fascia is massage.

Massage is the passive half of joint repair, and it follows the same principles as the active half (eccentric/isometric load training):

  • start with light pressure
  • go slowly
  • stop near low/moderate pain and wait, etc.

Another way to think of massage is "applying external pressure."


Applying external pressure to fascia and nerve tissue prompts many of the same biochemical signals in fascia that load training does, all without (much) effort ;)

To be clear, you still need to load train.  

Massage can't do everything load training can, but in terms of supporting it, massage is yin to load training's yang...
