Don't sabotage your joint repair goals by not getting enough protein! Here's what you need to know...
However, they're also made to understand that movement is just a stimulus, a set of instructions given to the body.
It's not what actually heals them.
Healing is a product of the body taking these instructions and making the most of them with a consistent recovery practice.
Recovery mainly comes down to getting good sleep, drinking enough water, and, perhaps most importantly, EATING ENOUGH PROTEIN.
So, if movement/exercise can be thought of as the "blueprint" the body uses to reconstruct itself at night during sleep, then protein is the "wood" it builds with.
In other words, you can have the perfect blueprint, but without enough protein your body lacks the raw material to make use of it. Bottom line: you don't heal.
According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), for "active adults" this is between 1.2 and 1.7 grams per kilogram of bodyweight daily.
So, if you suspect you're not getting enough "wood" in your diet, track it for a bit using this range and see if you're falling short.
And if you want a blueprint that'll make the best use of your wood, reach out to a strength coach specializing in joint repair.
I happen to know a guy :)
